One of my favourite wedding venues in the whole entire world is Chiswick House and Gardens, so I am incredibly lucky to live only 5 minutes away in Shepherd's Bush (well, 15 minutes when you add the traffic in. Nowhere is actually 5 minutes away when you live in London). So when Caitriona and Aaron asked me to be their wedding photography I was overjoyed. Not only was I blessed to photograph such a wonderful venue, but doubly blessed to photograph such a lovely couple. From the moment I met them for the pre-wedding meeting at Chiswick House to talk through the day, I knew that their day would be a special one, and I wasn't wrong! Combined with the truly fantastic staff at Chiswick House, and you really have one of the most enjoyable days I have been a part of (NB at this point in the blog, I am at risk at gushing so will rein it in for the next section)

The day started off where most memorable days start, in the pub. Aaron, his Dad and his Groomsmen went to The George in Chiswick and it was a really fun start to the day where I grabbed some nice relaxed and fun photos of the gents. Next, I was off to photograph the bridal prep which was only a short drive away. Caitriona was clearly relaxed before her big day and that is reflected in the photos which are full of smiles and joy rather than hand wringing and anxiety as can sometimes be the case!

The ceremony itself was held in Chiswick House, and although it may not be the most spacious venue in the world, it certainly is one of the most striking. I had such fun photographing this ceremony, as it was filled with lots of different traditions to reflect Aaron and Caitriona's Jewish and Scottish heritage, but there were so many wonderful wide-angle shots to get from the stunning interior of Chiswick House. With the ceremony done, the guests went across for drinks at the Conservatory, whilst the newlyweds and I grabbed some couple shots making the most out of the interior and exterior of Chiswick House and Gardens.

The day finished off with some of the best speeches I have ever heard in the marquee (including the best man and the MC performing a brilliant song they had wrote for Caitriona and Aaron) and some dance floor action. Check out the photos below, and congratulations to Caitriona and Aaron!!

Epsom College Wedding Photography https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2019/12/epsom-college-wedding-photography Here is a small selection of photos from Maddie and Josh's wedding, with the ceremony in the beautiful setting of Epsom College and the reception at Walton Heath Golf Club. The day started with Bridal prep at Maddie's parents house in Kingswood Park. It was a great start to the day with the talented Tania Stephenson-Oliver working her magic as the makeup artist, and the house flooded with natural light making my job so much easier!

The ceremony was held at Maddie's alma mater of Epsom College and it made for a fantastic wedding venue. The chapel is stunning and the grounds around the chapel make for a great location for group shots and some couple shots.

The day finished at Walton Heath Club, and includes one of my most enduring memories of my photography career. As anyone who follows my blog knows, I always like to do some photography with the Bride and Groom during the Golden Hour. For those who are unaware of this term, it refers to a period of daytime shortly after sunrise or before sunset, during which daylight is redder and softer than when the Sun is higher in the sky. The quality of the light at this time takes on a more magical property, if you have seen any of the early films of Terrence Malick you will know what I mean! As it had been a beautiful sunny day at Walton Heath Golf Club, I suggested to Maddie and Josh that we try and capture some shots during this golden hour, and they were more than willing and had an idea of their own! They grabbed a golf buggy and set off at high speed for the most picturesque area of the golf course. As the golf buggy only had two seats, I had to stand on the back as Josh flew across Walton Heath as the sun set. We grabbed some fantastic photos of Maddie and Josh to finish off an incredible day. Congratulations Maddie and Josh!

Winters Barns Wedding Photography https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2019/12/winters-barns-wedding-photography Winters Barns Wedding Photography

I have photographed several weddings at Winters Barns in Canterbury, and its a venue I love to work with. There is a beautiful setting for the ceremony both inside and outside, a lovely light area for the bridal prep, fantastic outside space for drinks and couple/group shots and a stunning setting for the wedding breakfast and speeches. On top of all this, is the fantastic staff who work there. I have worked alongside Lizzie several times and being friendly and professional as a wedding co-ordinator makes the day run incredibly smoothly for all involved. Winters Barns recently won the Venue of the Year at the Kent Wedding Awards and this is down to all the hard work of the staff there. Well deserved.

So when Louise and Tom booked me for their wedding at Winters Barns I was more than happy to travel to the beautiful city of Canterbury. It was a really fun day, Louise and Tom are a lovely and very organised couple surrounded by great friends and family. Add into the mix a perfect sunny day and you have the recipe for a perfect wedding filled with tears, laughter and joy. There are many special moments from the day that I have included below, including a great bouquet throw and catch. Love the reaction to the catch!

Congratulations to Louise and Tom!

Trunkwell House Wedding Photography https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2019/11/trunkwell-house-wedding-photography Trunkwell House Wedding Photography

Trunkwell House is a beautiful wedding venue located within 34 acres of the Berkshire countryside in the village of Beech Hill, Reading. I was lucky enough to photograph Anita and Ameet's. It was a day filled with so many special moments.

For a photographer, the day was filled with so many amazing traditions and moments to capture. At the start of the day, Anita got ready at Trunkwell house, with her beautiful Henna and exquisite dress produced some amazing photos in colour and B&W. When Ameet arrived at the venue he waited in his car as both sides of the family came together to exchange garlands of flowers. Then came a tradition that I have not seen before and which was great fun. Anita's family formed a barricade stopping Ameet's entrance to Trunkwell house, and as he approached he had to barter for entry. It was such a fun and interesting moment of the day that I loved being a part of.

I won't describe the ceremony in words and let the pictures below do the talking as there were so many special little moments in traditions. Anita looked stunning and Ameet made a very handsome groom.

As the rest of the day unfolded we had food, drink, speeches and dancing. The dancing has to get a special mention as everyone got involved to make a dancefloor filled with energy. To top the day off perfectly, we were rewarded with a beautiful sunset which allowed me to capture some lovely portraits of the newly married couple. Skip to the end to see them, you won't be disappointed!

If you are looking for a wedding venue Trunkwell house won't disappoint. If you would like me to capture your wedding day please head across to the Contact form to check on my availability or e-mail me at matthew@mbh-photography.co.uk

Congratulations to Anita and Ameet!

Laura Ashley Manor Wedding Photography https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2019/11/laura-ashley-manor-wedding-photography Laura Ashley Manor Wedding Photography

Katherine and Matthew chose the stunning venue of The Manor by Laura Ashley in Elstree for their wedding venue. On our pre-wedding meeting at the venue I could see why, the character of a classic style Tudor mansion given a tasteful modern twist with its furniture and interiors designed by Laura Ashley. With sweeping views at the rear of the mansion over London, this is a fantastic venue for a wedding.

After some photos of the Bridal Prep at The Manor, we travelled down into central London for the ceremony at St James Church, Spanish Place Marlyborne. I have lived in London for 15 years and photographed weddings for over a decade, so I thought I knew most Churches in London. Wrong! This place is an absolute gem hidden away Marlyborne. As you can see from the photos it's absolutely stunning.

After a wonderful ceremony, we headed back up the Laura Ashley Manor for an afternoon filled with food and drink. The speeches were particularly wonderful with lots of tears and laughter with all the guests in the bar laughing and cheering along. After all this was some incredible dancing! Sometimes guests can just stand around the dancefloor looking bashful, but there was no risk of that here as everyone got involved which resulted in some fun and action-packed photos!

Enjoy the photos below and congratulations to Katherine and Matthew!

Sangeet Wedding Photography https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2019/11/sangeet-wedding-photography I love a Sangeet party. There is food, booze, dancing and singing. What is not to like! Below are some photos from Anita's Sangeet night held at Horizons Bar & Banqueting (210 Hanworth Rd, Hounslow TW3 3TU Tel: +44 20 8814 0044)

For those who don't know, the word Sangeet means music, but used to describe an event during an Indian wedding it translates to Music Night or Musical party. This musical night is a celebration of the bride and groom coming together and the bonding of both families.

Please enjoy the small selection of photos below from the Sangeet party. If you are interested in me photographing any element of your wedding celebrations please head over the Contact form or e-mail me at matthew@mbh-photography.co.uk

Warren House Wedding Photography https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2019/11/warren-house-wedding-photography Warren House Wedding Photography

I am pleased to present below a selection of photographs from Ambre and Ben's special day at Warren House (Warren House, Warren Road, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey KT2 7HY   Phone: 020 8547 1777)

Ambre and Ben booked me after seeing photos that I had taken at Aynhoe Park, which was great as they understood my style and a wedding that I am particularly proud of! Like most couples I work with they wanted a unique record of their special day captured through photography that is natural and unposed. And that is the way I love to work since I started photographing weddings over a decade ago. I don’t want to spend hours of peoples day dragging them around a venue, posing them in unnatural positions when there is an actual wedding happening right in front of me…. why not just photograph that?

Warren House is a lovely Grade ll listed 19th Century Victorian mansion located in the secluded Coombe Estate in Kingston Upon Thames and a hidden gem of a Surrey wedding venue. The picturesque surrounds of the estate and the prestige of the house create a truly memorable day. It also has a long and fascinating history. Over the centuries, the Warren House Estate has passed from family to family, with wealthy bankers, American heiresses, politicians and humanitarians alike all counting themselves amongst its elite owners. Each owner left their own unique stamp on the building and its surrounding gardens, creating the beautiful, inimitable venue.

As well as a beautiful venue, the staff are all incredible and work extra hard to make sure that the Bride and Groom's day goes exactly to plan.

Ambre and Ben are blessed to have wonderful friends and family, and this wedding was a joy to photograph. Congratulations to Ambre and Ben!

Micklefield Hall Wedding Photography https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2019/1/micklefield-hall-wedding-photography Micklefield Hall Wedding Photography

Hollie and Jordan got married at Micklefield Hall on the 1st of September on an absolutely beautiful sunny day. Hollie had decided that she didn't want any bridal prep photos on the day so I got a chance to hang around with Jordan and his groomsmen as they had a few beers and did the classic exercise of trying to work out how to attach the button holes to their suits without stabbing pins into their fingers.

The ceremony at Micklefield Hall was held outdoors at one of the most beautiful settings I have ever photographed, it really is stunning. The pond in the middle gives the setting a beautiful reflection and the area is flanked by two beautiful giant trees. One of the most important times of the ceremony is when the Bride walks down the aisle and everyone, including the Groom, gets to see her for the first time. With this venue, that moment is amplified as the walk down the aisle is a stunning 50 metres or so. It really builds the moment up and is a fantastic part of the day.

After the ceremony, it was time for confetti and again the surroundings of Micklefield Hall provided the perfect backdrop. The same aisle that the Bride walked down was the perfect area for the guests to line up handfuls of confetti, and as you can see from the photos it didn't disappoint. After this, it was time for a well-earned drink for everyone and couples shots for Hollie and Jordan. There are so many options at Micklefield Hall for the Bride and Groom photography you could spend hours doing this alone, but not wanting to eat into the precious time of the day we spent 20 minutes on this and got some fantastic shots that Hollie and Jordan can cherish forever.

Following this, there was the speeches, food and then dancing. Congratulations to Hollie and Jordan!

Great Fosters Wedding Photography https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2018/12/great-fosters-wedding-photography Great Fosters Wedding Photography

Great Fosters is a wedding photographer's dream for two simple reasons, its beautiful on the inside and it's also beautiful on the outside which is probably the same reasons Kai and Ken decided to get married there. The grounds of Great Fosters offer plenty of options for group shots and couple shots, and the internal decor of this 16th-century mansion offers a great backdrop for every single shot. Check out the shot of Kai descended the stairs, this was one of the shots that helped me to get nominated for Best Wedding Photographer at the UK Wedding Awards.

Kai's day started off with the bridal prep and a little surprise from Ken. Ken had put together a book of all their time together and got me to deliver it to Kai when she was getting ready, she was utterly blown away! Ken straight away put most Grooms to shame (NB I got married this year and this was such a thoughtful idea that I straight up borrowed this concept and made something similar for my wife Rebecca. Thanks Ken!)

The ceremony was filled with laughter and smiles and strangely absent of nerves, and the confetti coming down the aisle was fantastic! After this was drinks, where I got as a fantastic collection of hugs (my favourite part of the day!). After this, we sneaked off for some couple shots. I usually like to limit this time to around 20-30 minutes as I don't want the day to turn into an extended photo shoot, but with all the options at Great Fosters, you could easily spend hours exploring all the different areas that there are to photograph. I am very happy with these couple shots as Kai looks beautiful, Ken looks handsome and the fantastic backdrop of Great Fosters just adds to every shot.

The speeches were filled with laughter and tears, and the dance floor was filled with an impressive amount of action. To finish the day, sparklers!! Congratulations to Kai and Ken!

The Landmark London Wedding Photography https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2018/12/the-landmark-london-wedding-photography The Landmark London Wedding Photography

Unfortunately for Kirsty and Alex, the wedding photographer they had booked had let them down and they contacted me just 14 days before their wedding day. Even though I was on holiday in Sicily at the time, we were quickly able to get the date in the calendar and contracts signed thanks to some very helpful reception staff (thanks Hotel Ville Ducale!). Being a wedding photographer obviously involves photography skills, but I do think some forget being reliable and professional at all times is just as important!

With all the unpleasantness behind them, Kirtsy and Alex could focus on a fantastic wedding at the incredible Landmark London which is literally a stone's throw from Marylebone station. Alex prepared himself in the tried and tested method of going to the pub beforehand which I got some fun coverage of, with Kirsty getting ready at the Landmark. Some of these black and white shots that I captured during the bridal prep are some of my favourite I have captured, with one of them being included in my portfolio when I obtained my Licentiateship from the British Institute of Professional Photography (LBIPP).

The ceremony was in one of the Landmark London's big and beautiful venue rooms, with the drink reception being held under the huge glass roof at the centre of the hotel. This was one of my favourite parts of the day with hugs and smiles in equal proportion. The speeches were in the same vein, and the band followed shortly after. I have seen lots of wedding bands in my time, and they can really make or break the atmosphere at the end of the day. This band was fantastic! I had a absolutely fantastic time photographing the band and everyone having the time of their lives, including limbo!

Congratulations to Kirsty and Alex!

Cooling Castle Barn Wedding Photography https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2018/11/cooling-castle-barn-wedding-photography I overheard a conversation at Cooling Castle Barn that Cooling Castle Barn have a wedding every single day of the year. I'm not quite sure how true that is, but you can tell that this venue knows what they are doing as it was one of the smoothest and most professional days I have been involved in. Lea and Dean got married in August on a beautiful day in Kent and it was a great day had by all.

The organisation of Cooling Castle Barn probably had a lot to do with the happy atmosphere of the day. There was no panic during the Bridal Prep as the bride only had to go from her room to the ceremony room about one hundred metres away. No need to worry about the transport of the guests between venues,as everything needed for the day was onsite. The Master of Ceremonies that had been provided helped the day tick over smoothly, whilst everyone had ample food and drink to hand.

Whilst the happy and relaxed mood is captured during the bridal prep, ceremony and speeches, Cooling Castle Barn is surrounded by some beautiful countryside. Lea and Dean had asked for some engagement photography when we had met at our first meeting, so we had already done a photo shoot together at Chiswick House and Gardens, and everyone knew what to expect. As we went to do the couple photography a bit of cloud came across the sky and gave the backdrop a really dramatic sense. Check out the shot of Lea and Dean in the field opposite Cooling Castle Barn, clouds are always more interesting than blue skies!

The day finished with a beautiful first dance from Lea and Dean as the sunset set over Kent. A beautiful day. Congratulations to Lea and Dean!

Oxford Register Office Wedding Photography https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2018/11/oxford-register-office-wedding-photography

Oxford Register Office Wedding Photography

Oxford really is a beautiful place to get married. I have lived in London now for 13 years and after photographing Emma and Phil's wedding in the centre of Oxford I came away a little jealous of the wonderful life that they have there. It's a beautiful city, everything is in walking distance pretty much and there is a lovely atmosphere.

The day started with Emma and her Bridesmaids getting ready at a townhouse about a 10-minute drive from Oxford Register Office. Sometimes this time of the day can be quite stressful as all those plans start to come together at the last minute, but there was absolutely no anxiety to be found here. Everyone was relaxed, smiling and happy with coffee and eggs to prepare for the day. Take a look at the photos, it really is smiling everywhere you look.

Next, it was on to Oxford Register Office right in the centre for the ceremony. Apart from Emma and Phil walking the wrong way to the aisle (still don't know how that happened) everything went smoothly with tears and laughter in equal measure. As anyone who knows my photography, I do love a photograph of a hug, and the one of Emma and her Mum hugging after the ceremony is one of my favourite of the year.

After the ceremony, it was a short walk around the corner to The Jam Factory. I met Emma and Phil here at our pre-wedding meeting a few months before the big day and it matched their personalities perfectly, fun and laid back.

You could argue that one of the downsides of having a city wedding is that the couple shots don't have those dramatic backdrops that you get in the countryside. Whilst the backdrops might not have been as epic, the couple shots I have from the day are a lovely reflection of Emma and Phil.

The rest of the day at the Jam Factory was drinks, food, speeches, dancing and a fantastic DJ from the Groom himself!

Great Fosters ~ My Favourite Wedding Photos https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2018/6/great-fosters-my-favourite-wedding-photos

Many of my photos that I have included in this My Favourite Wedding Photos series are all pure documentary photos, which have hopefully shown off my skills as a documentary photography and my ability to capture a fleeting moment that would have otherwise been lost. Whilst the photo of Kai on the staircase is definitely not a documentary photo, it does show off another skill as a photographer that I find just as important, which is preparation.

This photo was no accident, and is a result of pre-wedding meeting at Great Fosters with Kai & Ken. We walked around the building and the grounds and talked through the day, and as soon as a saw this staircase i visualised this shot and how I wanted it to look. Their is a lovely juxtaposition of the crisp white of Kai's beautiful dress against the vibrant red carpet, and the central staircase leads the viewer's eye through the photograph. All I had to do on the day is to make sure that Kai walked down the staircase on her own (having her bridesmaids in this shot would have cluttered it somewhat), but I didn't provide any direction as I still wanted the photo to feel natural although it was planned.

The result is a beautiful photo for Kai and Ken to treasure. Importantly also, this photo didn't have any time impact on the day as I had planned ahead. I have seen other photographers and videographers have Bride or Grooms repeat the same thing over and over again until they get the result they wanted, which can be a huge time drain on the day and can all be avoided by a little bit of preparation on the part of the professional.

Hope you enjoy the photo, please feel to comment below.

Camden Town Hall Wedding Photographer https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2018/6/camden-town-hall-wedding-photographer

As a London Wedding Photographer I have been lucky enough to photograph weddings at Camden Town Hall on several occasions, and it really is a great place to get married. Outside is the frenetic buzz of the London streets, but inside Camden Town Hall it is like an oasis of calm with elegant marble stairs (NB Please never sell off this building Camden council!) and the variety of different rooms in which your ceremony can take place.

The wedding of Emma and Chris was a first for me as the ceremony took place in Committee Room 3A. What this room lacks in an imaginative title, it makes up in character as it is a wonderful space for an intimate wedding with fantastic views of St Pancras Renaissance Hotel just across the street. Not only were we able to take advantage of the beautiful marble staircase at Camden Town Hall for a few group shots, but we were lucky enough to get 15 minutes of time at St Pancras Renaissance Hotel and the incredible staircase there as well. I think the photo above speak for itself!

Although Emma and Chris only hired me for two hours, we got an incredible selection of photographs, with a lovely blend of my documentary wedding photography and some slightly more extravagant photos like in the black and white staircase photo above. Emma was king enough to leave me this feedback after she received the photos:

"Matthew did a fantastic job of photographing our intimate ceremony. We have so many lovely photos from the day it is hard to choose which ones to print!

Our expectations were exceeded. Matthew is professional and friendly and really knows his stuff, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him."

Always nice to hear when people are happy! Here are a selection of photos below. If you are planning a wedding and would like to learn about my photography, please contact me at matthew@mbh-photography.co.uk

Wadhurst Castle Wedding Photography https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2018/1/wadhurst-castle-wedding-photography Wadhurst Castle is a stunning wedding venue set in the East Sussex countryside. Maddy and Nick got married here in August of 2017 and it was a fantastic day to be a part of.

Wadhurst Castle has a lot going for it as a wedding venue. As a 19th century, grade II listed building the venue gives a real sense of grandeur to the occasion, and its elevated position gives stunning views to the south. The room where Maddy and her bridesmaids got ready for the day was flooded with natural light as the room was south facing, which allowed me to get a great collection of Bridal prep shots. There is nothing worse than having a beautiful bride but next to no light to actually photograph them in!

Maddy and Nick got married in the walled garden within the grounds of Wadhurst Castle, and its another massive plus point for this venue. It manages to combine the sense of being in the open, yet with a sense of seclusion and intimacy that not many venues can provide. The ceremony was beautiful.

The rest of the day was spent enjoying drinks and games in the grounds of Wadhurst Castle. As well as the panoramic sky to the South, there were lots of more intimate spaces for Maddy & Nicks's couple photography. In case you haven't noticed, I really enjoyed photographing at this venue with the help of the fantastic staff! Enjoy the photos below and let me know your thoughts in the comments section at the end.

All Saints Stand Whitefield Wedding Photography https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2018/1/all-saints-stand-whitefield-wedding-photography There was so much to love about the wedding day of Susan and Jonathan. I rarely do weddings outside of London and the South East nowadays, so it was a pleasure to travel up to my parents hometown of Bury to photograph a wedding. Susan got prepared for her big day at their house, and the laid back atmosphere really helped me capture some lovely little moments here and there.

The wedding itself was at All Saints Stand church in Whitefield. Wow, what a church! I believe this was designed by the architect Sir Charles Barry, and it was actually his first commission. Barry would later in his life go on to rebuild the Houses of Parliament including Big Ben after the fires in 1834, so this church has a real claim to fame! Both internally and externally this church was amazing, so it gave me lots of options for before, during and after the ceremony. I would also like to point out that I captured some of my favourite photos of the year after the ceremony when the guests were congratulating the Bride & Groom, scroll down to have a look. Hugs are what weddings are all about!

After the ceremony everyone went off to the reception at The Stables in Bury. The outside space that Susan and Jonathan had set up with games, music and cake for both children and adults to enjoy alike, was simply fantastic and was a documentary photographers dream. The giant Jenga alone had my transfixed, as capturing that point when its just falling along with everyones reaction is fantastic!

Anyway, enough of my waffling on, here are the photos to enjoy. Congratulations Susan and Jonathan!

Emma and Phil Xmas Sneak Peek https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/12/emma-and-phil-xmas-sneak-peek Emma and Phil's wedding was on Saturday and it really was a great day filled with fun, laughter and Lego. With Christmas just round the corner, I thought it would be nice for them to see a small collection of the photos from the day before they are all ready in the New Year. Enjoy!

Newland Hall Wedding Photography https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/12/newland-hall-wedding-photography What a great venue Newland Hall is. In the heart of the Essex Countryside, this fantastic Grade II listed tudor manor house offers bags of charm as a wedding venue. It gives options for a ceremony to be held indoors or outdoors, dedicated and enthusiastic staff and a beautiful setting in the countryside.

Althea and Moses were married at Newland Hall in July of this year. The most fascinating part of this wedding for me to see how two cultures of marriage integrated in this wedding day, with parts of British and Nigerian culture coming together. Check out the first dance photos near the end of this collection, they are great. Althea and Moses did two first dances, one more of a British first dance, and the 2nd one of Nigerian influence. In my humble opinion, the Nigerian first dance won hands down!

Unfortunately for most of the day it rained very heavily, but luckily Newland Hall has plenty of options both indoors and outdoors so the day was not impacted. Due to the rain the amount of time we had for Bride & Groom outdoor photography was extremely limited. However, we got some shots right at the end of the day as the sun was setting with Althea & Moses in their traditional Nigerian attire. Although its not my traditional style of photography, I think the final shot perfectly represents the day itself, a coming together of British and Nigerian cultures.

All Saints West Dulwich Wedding Photography https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/12/all-saints-west-dulwich-wedding-photography For a few years I used to live in Streatham Hill, and I thought that I had got to know it and the surrounding area quite well. So it came as a bit of a surprise to me when I first saw All Saints in West Dulwich, as it is a big and beautiful church tucked away on a quiet street in South London. A lot of London weddings that I photograph are in registry offices which have their own charms, but to photograph in a big, beautiful and modern church like this in London is fantastic.

The wedding of Fran & Henry took place on a sunny day in June. The Church gave me plenty of options for a wide range of different photographs during the ceremony and beforehand. Straight after the ceremony I always insist that any group shots that the couple want are NOT taken immediately after the ceremony, as this is the emotional heart of the day for me. After a couple are married the first thing everyone wants to do is congratulate them and give them a hug, which gives an incredible opportunity for documentary photography to capture these fleeting moments. I would go as far as to say its my favourite part of the wedding day. If you have some idiot photographer barking orders at people for group shots during these moments it would totally ruin the emotion of the day. This is why its always good to hire a wedding photographer with alot of experience, because it can have a critical impact on how the day flows.

After some well timed group shots, everyone went down to Fran & Henry's local pub, The Paxton in Gipsy Hill. This was fantastic for me as a photographer because everyone just relaxed in the sun in the pub garden, and I was just able to do my job as a documentary photographer. The photography really does capture the emotion of the moment as everyone is smiling and laughing in the Spring sunshine, and its why I love the job so much! The day finished for me at the speeches (which were great) as Fran and Henry had hired me for 4 hours only. However, during this limited time I think I captured the spirit of the day fantastically, and the set of photographs will be an excellent reminder of the day for Fran and Henry for years to come.

Chelsea Old Town Hall Wedding Photography https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/12/chelsea-old-town-hall-wedding-photography I have photographed at Chelsea Old Town Hall 3 times now and I am getting rather fond of it. It's not the most spectacular wedding venue in the world, but there is a feel to it that makes it just seem special. Maybe it is the location, or the history of the venue, or the fact that the registrars there clearly take pride in the job they do. Whatever combination of factors it is, I always look forward to photographing here.

Holly and Adam got married here in June of 2017. Holly started the day at The Kensington in SW7, which is not a bad place to start the day! It was quite a relaxed start to the day so the collection of documentary Bridal Prep shots reflect this atmosphere nicely.

After the intimate ceremony at Chelsea Old Town Hall, Holly and Adam had hired a private boat to take the wedding guests on a Thames River Cruise. I really can recommend this for a London wedding as it was a fantastic part of the day. Everyone got to see the sites essentially in a travelling bar. Great idea!!

After this Holly, Adam and I took some time to nip across to Battersea Park and take some couple shots. I find its important to get a nice blend throughout the day of documentary and slightly more "formal" shots. Whilst throughout the day I spend most of my time in a documentary frame of mind, I do find its important to get a few of the couple shots whilst making sure the Bride & Groom feel relaxed so the photos feel natural and honest.

To finish the day, the wedding party finished the day at Tom Aikens (him from Great British Menu fame if you watch it every year like me) restaurant Toms Kitchen. Great food, great wine, great speeches and great people!

Rivervale Barn Wedding Photography https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/11/rivervale-barn-wedding-photography The first time I visited Rivervale Barn for the pre-wedding meeting with Jo and Mark, I was struck at how the entire building seemed custom built for a wedding. Turns out, that was exactly the case. Most wedding venues are a collection of buildings that have been added to over time to enable them to be used for weddings, whilst Rivervale Barn clearly was built from the ground up to be a wedding venue. As I understand it, the owner of Rivervale Barn built it next to his house for his own daughters wedding, and it is now hired out to that purpose. The huge benefit of a space built specifically for wedding results in the day flowing incredibly well, with no lengthy waits for rooms to be turned around. I can say I really enjoyed photographing this wedding at Rivervale Barn!

As you may notice from this set of wedding photos, there are very few Bridal Prep shots. Jo didn't feel comfortable with Bridal Prep shots, and whilst I can understand her reservations, I really wish she had agreed to this as I find them a critical part of the day and the story that the photos from the day tell. Most Brides have a few reservations about Bridal Prep shots, but after 5 mins of me being there all those reservations are gone and the Brides are always delighted with the results! The rest of the day was great to photograph, with a good blend of documentary photography (my pick of these being the shot of the doors being opened for the Bridesmaids), couple photography and the more formal group shots.

The Art of Photo Editing https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/7/the-art-of-photo-editing It’s that time of year again when I don’t really have time to write a wealth of blog posts, as I am either shooting weddings or sitting at my computer here and editing and processing the wedding photos in Lightroom and Photoshop. Whilst talking to a client recently, I realised that most people don’t realise the amount of work that goes into the photos after the wedding day itself. So with that in mind I thought I would write this post to give people a little bit of insight.

Here is a photo that I took recently at Fran and Henry’s wedding in South East London.

The photo above captures a nice moment and is Straight out of Camera (SOOC). SOOC is a term used that there has been zero processing of the image. Whilst there is nothing wrong with the photo as it is, there are a few steps that can be taken to improve the photo and help the viewer’s eye focus on the emotion of the photo and not be distracted by anything else.

Here is the photo after I have edited it in Lightroom.

The photo has been cropped to focus on the man and the baby more, and a levels adjustment has been added to boost the contrast of the photo to make it more striking. The colour temperature has also been raised slightly to give the photo a warmer feel, whilst some input sharpening has also been applied to give the image more crispness. All these are small steps, but added together really help the photo stand out.

Here is the photo after it has been edited in Photoshop.

The human eye gets easily distracted, and in this photo there were several small parts of the image that were drawing the viewer’s eye away from central focus of the man and the baby. The small reflection in the window, the top of the post at the bottom of the image, the faint outline of a man’s head in the bottom right, and the dark section in the far left of the photo. Using several techniques in Photoshop it was possible to remove all of these elements to create a far more impactful image, and allows the viewer to focus on the tender moment of the man kissing the baby.

All these little steps help turn a nice photo into a great photo, and its why on average when you hire me as your wedding photographer you get a full working week of my time, not just the wedding day itself.

PhotoFilm https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/4/photofilm

A few months ago I attended a workshop with two of my favourite wedding photographers, Kevin Mullins & Neale James. I find as a photographer you need to constantly learn and develop your skills and workshops is an excellent way of doing this. During one of these sessions Neale James was talking about how he makes PhotoFilms, and I instantly became fascinated with this idea. Basically a PhotoFilm is taking a selection of the photos of the day and creating a short film with music and audio recorded from the speeches. I have found that this creates a wonderful complement to the photographs and helps to emphasise the emotion from the day.

The PhotoFilm above is from Victoria & Sam's wedding in August 2016 at Aynhoe Park. I am very pleased with the results as a lot of hard work has gone into learning new techniques from creating a short film such as this. I sent the video to Victoria & Sam and got this wonderful response

"I am so excited by this – we watched it last night and it is fantastic!! So thoughtfully and cleverly prepared with both the music and the speeches. Thank you for taking the time to do this for us – it must have taken ages and we really appreciate it. I am still guilty of looking through our wedding pics on a rather regular basis and now having the PhotoFilm means I can indulge myself yet further" Victoria & Sam

I will now be offering PhotoFilms to all my clients for only £295 alongside my main Digital & Album packages. If you would like further details please use the Contact Me page or e-mail me at matthew@mbh-photography.co.uk

Licentiateship British Institute of Professional Photography https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/3/licentiateship-british-institute-of-professional-photography

I am very pleased to announce that I have been awarded a Licentiateship by the British Institute of Professional Photography. I was awarded my LBIPP after a qualification assessment in front of a 3 person panel at the BIPP headquarters in Whitchurch. The bar for entry into the British Institute of Professional Photography is set very high, so it is a great honour to have achieved this qualification.

I was given some great feedback about my 25 image submission, and I feel it is a validation of my documentary approach to the wedding day and the desire to capture the emotion of the day rather than following a formulaic approach.

In an industry where quality and standards can be hugely variable, this professional accreditation is a strong reassurance of the quality of the work from MBH Wedding Photography.

I will be striving for further accreditation with the BIPP in the years to come. For further information on the BIPP, please visit their website here.

You can see my 25 image submission below.

Aynhoe Park Wedding Photography https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/3/aynhoe-park-wedding-photography I will start by saying that Aynhoe Park is probably my favourite wedding venue in the whole of the UK. Not only is a stunning venue with lots of visually interesting areas everywhere you look, but the staff have to be the most dedicated professionals I have ever had the pleasure of working with. With everyone focusing on delivering the Bride & Groom the perfect wedding day, it’s amazing what can be achieved.

Victoria & Sam were married on a beautiful day in August 2016. Victoria and her bridesmaids got ready in room Number Four, which was flooded with natural light and had beautiful views across the Oxford country side.  As the church is literally next door to Aynhoe Park, it was just a short walk for the Bride and I was able to capture some fabulous shots of Victoria walking down the unique staircase.

After a beautiful and intimate ceremony, we had time for a fun confetti shot followed by a receiving line. I have learned to love receiving lines as everybody is so excited to get a chance to congratulate the Bride & Groom personally, and it’s a time of the day which is always filled with such emotion. I think the photos I have captured here are some of my best documentary work to date.

The rest of the day effortlessly flew by as speeches filled with humour and tears were given and first dances gave way to a party atmosphere later in the night. We also managed to sneak in a sunset shot over the Oxfordshire country side, and it really was the moment you dream of as a photographer. The light was perfect, a beautiful Bride & Groom and a stunning backdrop!

Congratulations to Victoria & Sam.

Ealing Abbey Wedding Photography https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/1/ealing-abbey-wedding-photography

I first met Amanda & Nicolas over a coffee at Westfield near my house in Shepherds Bush. Nicolas studied film at University and had a very detailed eye when it came to photography, so when they picked me to be their photographer for their special day it truly was an honour that I matched Nicolas' high standards and attention to detail.

The day started off at Amanda's house in Ealing, where I took a photo that I have recently written an individual blog post about as it is one of my favourite bridal prep photos I have ever taken! The ceremony itself was at Ealing Abbey Catholic Church of St Benedict, which really is a hidden gem in West London. I think the only church that I have photographed a wedding at that can top this is St Pauls, and that really is saying something! After a lovely ceremony everyone moved on to Trailfinders, where I witnessed some of the most emotional speeches and great dancing I have ever seen.

My favourite part of Amanda & Nicolas' day was the amount of genuine emotion that ran through the entire day. Sometimes weddings can feel shackled by the amount of formality involved, but this really wasn't the case here. Everywhere I looked there was tears, smiles and most importantly, hugs! I love photographing hugs at weddings so this was like Christmas for me.

After I delivered the full set of photos to Amanda & Nicolas I received some lovely feedback from the Bride & Groom:

"Outstanding quality and impeccable execution. Matthew was virtually invisible during our wedding, which I never thought I would consider it to be important. Trust me, you don't want the photographer showing up at every turn on your video (if you have one), or even worse, directing the event and making it awkward. None of this happened with Matthew. He was perfectly professional before, during and after. We got a load of photos, as promised, and the time-frame from the event to pics delivery was spot on. In terms of his approach, he will not do lots of "posing" but he can if you need him to. However, he excels at the documentary / photo journalism style. If you want great results, let him do his thing. You won't regret it.As far as pricing is concerned, perfectly where it needs to be. Not cheap, but not extreme either and he does offer different packages. All in all, a definite must consider if you're shopping around for a wedding photographer."

Congratulations to Amanda & Nicolas!

MBH Wedding Photography 2016 Roundup https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/1/mbh-wedding-photography-2016-roundup

In global terms, 2016 was a horrendous year. We got a mad demagogue in a wig & we lost many of our brilliant creative people from music and acting.

However, in my small corner of the wedding photography world, 2016 was absolutely brilliant. After over 125+ weddings I am at a stage where I can say I am consistently happy with my results. Have a look at the video above. Turn the sound on and enjoy!

Chelsea Old Town Hall Wedding Photography https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/1/chelsea-old-town-hall-wedding-photography

I first photographed a wedding at Chelsea Old Town Hall in 2009, in fact it was the first wedding I photographed. With 125+ weddings under my belt since then it was a pleasure to go back to photograph at this intimate registry office. I now only live a few miles down the road in Shepherds Bush so I know the area very well, and it is a lovely area of West London to get married.

The wedding of Eleni & Pete was a wonderful and intimate day that I look back on very fondly. Every one had a smile on their face and the day was very relaxed and enjoyable. Pete is a restaurateur and was kind enough to give me a seat at one of their tables for a fantastic 5 course lunch at Picture restaurant on Great Portland Street. It really was amazing! Being seated amongst the guests is always a huge benefit as I just become another guest, and I really think it helps in the documentary photography I enjoy so much as the people around me are far more relaxed with my presence.

In the evening it was on to Barsmith on St John Street in Farringdon for msic, drinks, dancing a and speeches! Congratulations to Eleni and Pete, what a great day!

Pride ~ My Favourite Wedding Photos https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/1/pride-my-favourite-wedding-photos This really is one of my favourite wedding photos I have taken, and in many ways it sums up my approach to photography. I used to find welcoming lines at weddings quite tedious affairs, but that was until I learnt to position myself behind the Bride & Groom and focus on the guests. Now, it is one of my favourite parts of the day because armed with my trusty 50mm lens I can capture a whole range of human emotion, from happiness, laughter, pride all the way through to envy!

The photo above was taken at Canterbury Cathedral Lodge, just a stones away from Canterbury Cathedral itself. I had positioned myself behind the groom with my camera set to f/2 to try and isolate the guests face in the frame. The lady above is the mother of the groom and I believe she is in hers 90's. The look on her face sums it all up, and shows the power of photography as it doesn't need any lengthy explanation along with it. So proud.

This photo was used recently at a documentary photography workshop and one of my fellow photographers commentated that he would put this in black & white. I have tried this, but something about the pink of her hat and her bright blue eyes make this work better in colour.

Like I said, love this photo!

Camden Town Hall Wedding Photography https://www.mbh-weddingphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/1/camden-town-hall-wedding-photography

Katherin is from Germany and Bruno is from Portugal, and have both been living in London for many years, so it probably wasn't a shock for them that the start of their wedding day was raining heavily in Paddington, West London. As I have found through a 100+ weddings, things always get better! As they made their way to Camden Town Hall on Judd Street just opposite Kings Cross St Pancras, it turned into a beautiful day for their wedding. After their ceremony they had hired a old school red London bus to take their friends and family to the wedding reception at The Truscott Arms near Warwick Avenue (which to my horror I have just found out is now closed due to a huge rent hike) where it was time for drinks, laughs, food and speeches.

I have fond memories of this wedding as the two families that were brought together from Germany and Portugal, most had not met before and spent the day getting to know each other. For me, this is what weddings are all about. Obviously it is about the Bride & Groom, but its about the people that the Bride & Groom bring together creating a whole new series of friendships and relationships. Documentary wedding photography captures these little moments between people, rather than just having 400 photos of the Bride & Groom in slightly different poses.

Anyway, enough of my documentary wedding photography rant, congratulations to Kathrin & Bruno!
